AZUMINI BLUE RIVER, ABIA’S UNTAPPED GOLD MINE
By Witson Anyatonwu
Before March 6, 2021 I have been opportuned to visit the beautiful Blue River at AZUMINI, sadly nothing has changed since my first visit.
While others were enjoying themselves with the warmth reception by the wonderful people of AZUMINI, I was lost in my thoughts on why we (the people and government of Abia State) still have not harnessed the wealth nature gave us in this river.
According to a 2017 tourism report by the World Economic Forum, travel and tourism (T&T) currently contributes about 2% to Nigeria’s GDP (about $1b) compared to other African countries such as Seychelles, Cape Verde and Mauritius where the T&T industry has been better harnessed, contributing 20%, 17% and 12% respectively to GDP.
Of this whooping amount, Abia earns less than 1% very pathetic.
Chatting with the people of Azumini, one feels their desire to have people from all over the world come visiting.
We were told of how foreigners troops in to experience nature in olden days…
Whatever happened to those days?
The host communities are very accommodating and willing to partner with government and private companies or individuals to develop Azumini Waterfronts and Beach.
I call on Government of Abia State who’s got a thing with attracting investors, foreign and local to look in the direction of Azumini.
Indeed Azumini Blue River is Abia’s untapped gold mine!!!
The jobs it will create the foreign exchange it will attract and most importantly the joy it will bring is 2nd to none.
I want to believe that in no distant time the dream of Chief Paddy Anyatonwu
of making Azumini a top destination would materialize
