A Costly Walk

By Paddy Anyatonwu

John and Azubuike jointly took a decision.
Both are blind and from Orsemohu, in Anambra State.
Their decision was to take a walk in a terrain that is fraught with potholes, craters, and all kinds of dangerous reptiles.
Since they are blind, it does not matter the time the duo agreed to embark on this walk.
Curiously, they chose 9 pm, Nigerian time.
Before they concluded at a point of departure, but a mutual friend of theirs, Badikebanma, overheard them and became troubled.
This is because Badikebanma is familiar with the terrain as he used to fetch firewood when he was a little lad.
He accosted his friends and tried every known logic and even employed the tactics of Socrates to disabuse their minds not to take such a dangerous plunge.
Consistent with every determined mind, the duo dismissed their friend and admonished him to get behind them.
As people who had been trained in the Court of a master, punctuality is taken seriously.
By 9 am prompt, John and Azubuike sauntered into the terrain.
Badikebanma got pissed off and left in anger as Keke operators will close shops by 10 pm.
However, the mission of this infamous ‘walk’, the duo kept secret.
Barely 30 minutes of walking, John fell into a crater.
All efforts made by Azubuike to pull his friend out off the pit proved abortive.
Suddenly, John started blaming his friend.
Shouting at the tip of his voice, John said, “Azu, you better make quick plans to pull me out of here.
You have wasted so much time already. Be fast. It is even your fault to have allowed me to have fallen into this valley. Had it been that you were vigilant, I wouldn’t have fallen. Be fast, I beg of you”.
Azubuike was confused that his friend is blaming him.
He tried to call Badikebanma via telephone, but his number was switched off.
